The underlying reason why most cases of nasal polyps form is persistent irritation to the delicate lining of the sinus passages. However, the cause of the irritation can vary from person to person. For example, some people's nasal polyps are triggered by chronic allergies or sinusitis that won't let the sinuses properly drain. If you would like to read more about this, check out the Mayo Clinic's page on nasal polyps, which covers the symptoms, treatment and typical causes.

In my case, my nasal polyps popped up after a really long bout of sinus congestion that led to an infection. Unfortunately, it was treated early enough, and it persisted for a pretty long time. Since then, I haven't been able to get rid of them and I can only sometimes get temporary relief.

Getting rid of congestion is an ongoing task for me. I'd say, oh, six days out of seven I'm walking around with a stuffy nose. And although I'd much rather have a stuffy nose than a runny one, I still don't like to feel congested, either. After a lot of thought and frustrion, I realized that a lot of my congestion problems are directly related to the way I eat and drink. So I guess in other words, what you put in your body definitely DOES matter - especially if you're trying to get rid of nasal congestion or polyps

I think that one of the most important things when it comes to getting rid of congestion is staying well hydrated. I'm pretty bad about drinking enough water sometimes - I just get busy and forget to drink and eat until later in the day when I stop for a minute and realize how thirsty/hungry I really am. So, I've decided that it's in my best interest to keep a jug of water next to me at all times. Hopefully reaching down and sipping on it throughout the day will start to become second nature after a while!
